Educational Online games

Hello everyone,

This week I will be discussing educational online games. There are many websites that have online educational games. Many of them have been around for years. The majority of the sites are not promoted so you wouldn't really know if they are available for kids. Honestly I can remember sites that I used in elementary and middle school. Websites like FunBrain.com and PBS kids are well known when it comes to online gaming

Online educational games for kids have proven to be very beneficial learning tools. These games help kids learn many of the skills needed throughout their early childhood education. Learning games are particularly useful for younger kids and can help build confidence while enhancing the skills needed for success in school. Educational games for toddlers prepare young ones for their first scholastic experience and educational games for preschool students teach kids important skills and concepts required by a preschooler. The kids' games provided here allow children to have fun while they learn. Fun educational games encourage children to keep learning, even after school hours.
This Video will help break down educational online gaming.

Overall I think online gaming has made a huge impact with helping kids learn while playing games. Hopefully they continue to create educational games that will keep the kids learning and having fun while away from school.

  1. Oliver,
Gaming has an huge potential in future learning, even present learning. I remember playing my computer games years gone by, I did learn content as well as how to work the computer games. The fine line is when the student learns the game, but not the content the game is trying to present to the learner. I wonder what processes game developers go through to create well-designed content that the students learns the content as they play.

  2. Oliver,
I remember playing this one computer games when I was younger that taught me how to be a better typer, and I firmly believe that my love for writing sprouted from that, and has helped me become an incredibly avid typer today. I was never a huge fan of online games, however, I think they're a great way to educate kids today. Children are constantly on their gadgets so why not introduce games that help entertain AND educate them rather than only the former?!

And Cameron, I think you point out the key problem...drawing the line between learning the game and learning the content. Game designers have a very difficult job when it comes to creating successful educational games because keeping children entertained is both crucial and extremely difficult in our media-packed world.

  3. Hi Oliver, I like your post this week because it compliments my post from last week where I shared a link to e-learningforkids.org. I talked about how kids can continue to engage on the website, but if directed to the correct sites to 'play', it makes their learning more fun. Your post is an excellent example of that and you mentioned lots of benefits for learners of all ages. Great Job.

  4. Hello Oliver,

I like the idea of games to learn, when my daughter was little I remember buying her electronic games to help her learn, I think they were called leap frog games. When she got a bit older we bought a gaming system and I tried to buy games that would be fun as well as educational. I remember her being into the Sims game when she was in her teens. I am not a person that plays games online or on a gaming system I think this is due to the fact there were not around when I was growing up but I do see the value in them, if you are a visual learner I think this is a great platform to learn from.
